I have not studied General George Custer, but did talk to a few people who have. So when I came across an old portrait of him pouting intense arrogance, I wanted to change the meaning of the image. Replacing him with a beautiful contemplative woman grounded the image for me. In Custer’s day, it would have been a great insult to his arrogant self to be called a woman. But I enjoy the idea of a woman being strong enough to have held the role of general in a time when their roles were highly restricted.
