Aristotle’s Library

Whenever I look at ruins my first thought is this; “How could people have built such amazing structures with such primitive tools?” I realized this was a very limiting question that always left me wondering what used to stand in place of the ruins rather than what used to take place in the ruins. I wanted to create an image that alluded to the loss of knowledge as well as the loss of architectural beauty. The spiral staircases winding up like DNA helices to the sky creates the impression that the structure actually rose up into the heavens, to a place of higher, unearthly knowledge. The tragedy of the ruins is that we can only get a hint of what used to be, both physically and intellectually.
